Tuesday Trash Bubbles: Embrace Your Vintage

For a while now, I’ve been considering a monumental milestone… I am approaching the half century mark at warp speed. There is no stopping it. I can’t hit the pause button, or rewind to an earlier time. I am powerless.

What does one do in such a situation?

Not sure about the rest of you, but I constructed a Trash Bubble encouraging myself to Embrace Your Vintage.

It all began with the dread fifty brings and a used wine cork.

Recently, I’d saved the packaging from a Faber Castell Big Brush Pen because I liked the scrolling design printed on it. It made the perfect housing for my bubble.

As I considered the cork, the word VINTAGE kept nagging at me. I’m so vintage, I’ll soon be an antique! But wine, fine wine, gets better with age, right?

It was time to begin looking at possible items for inclusion with an eye toward supporting that old adage.

My husband had found the old grape bunch button not too long ago and it fit the theme, so it went into the pile.

Digging through my bits of this and that, I turned up the vintage automobile, a small piece of rusty upholstery trim, a rusty bit, a sales tax token and tea bag wisdom. “The paradox of age:” it says “The young want to be old and the old want to be young.” Perfect!

The year would have to be incorporated inconspicuously… bingo balls and markers are always good for that.

The ideal placement for the cork left room at the top and bottom. I took that opportunity to hang a feminine charm from it and added a vintage political thimble (Vote so-and-so for Sheriff) that had seen better days, topped with apiece of brass hardware.

The whole thing was sealed up with washi tape and brads.

Voila! I now have a talisman to Embrace my Vintage! Any time I start panicking, I’ll just meditate on the the message it bears.

Happy Trash to you, until we meet again!

Tuesday Trash Bubbles: Wishes and Stars

One of my big goals for 2017 is to re-purpose my ENTIRE STASH of consumer packaging into Trash Bubbles. I can’t even tell you how many pieces I have waiting in the wings… probably hundreds!

Creating Trash Bubbles is, for me, an intuitive process that can’t be forced. It sometimes takes weeks or months to complete just one.

Working on several at a time is ideal for me because it gives me variety. Often when I’m stuck on one, another will grab my attention. In this way, I can keep working and making progress.

Last week, I snapped this pic as I began working on several bubbles…

This week, I managed to finish this one, Wishes and Stars.

It’s a very personal piece for me, filled with encouragement to “Reach for the Stars… Endless possibilities… Warning: Dreams can happen!” echoing all manner of affirmations that have been presenting lately, as I firmly set my intentions for the remainder of the year.

Often, I use a vintage bit, if not true trash, centrally in the bubble. This vintage Westinghouse button helped to anchor the affirmations. Like some of my other bubbles, this one is interactive. All but three of the stars are loose inside and when jiggled they float around… it reminds me of that little vintage game that you shook to get the balls to fall into place…. Please tell me that you remember it, too?

The back side of the packaging got a little workover, too. It tells one that “When you SHAKE it you can transform your LIFE!”

In the end, I was pleased with the way this bubble morphed from glow-in-the dark stars and planets packaging into an encouraging talisman.

Happy Trash to you, until we meet again!

My Wild and Crazy World: Getting Ready for Black Mountain School

DSC_0586

Happy Saturday Morning!

I’m popping in with an announcement… This past week got crazy, what with all of the preparations for my upcoming trip to BMS (Black Mountain School.) I don’t anticipate the coming week will be any better, as I leave this coming Friday.

That said, Friday Dada posts are on hold until further notice. The next several weeks’ Monday Morning Mail Art Call (MMMAC) posts have been scheduled, so there’s no interruption there. I will do my best to resume the Tuesday Trash Bubble posts after having skipped this week, hoping to build Trash Bubbles at BMS and share them with you all.

In addition, I will be posting from BMS about all manner of things, including my experiences as I go. I will also be posting shorter blurbs and pictures on my facebook artist page: https://www.facebook.com/TheStudioatPineyCreekAcres/ If you are friends with me on facebook, there will be status updates, too.

Just this week, I launched my Patreon artist page and will also be posting about BMS there. https://www.patreon.com/TheStudioatPineyCreekAcres?ty=h I will share more about my Patreon at a later date.

Each of these venues will receive different posts, so you might want to check ’em all so as not to miss any of the BMS excitement!

Finally, a BIG THANK YOU!!! to everyone who helped to make this trip to BMS a reality for me! To those of you who shared my Go Fund Me, ( https://www.gofundme.com/pmy4c6fc ) contributed to it, and those who offered words of encouragement and support… I truly could not have done it without you. You are ROCK STARS to me! Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for believing in me!
